As you'll hear in the recording, one of my favourite things to do in my events and workshops is to ask Mother Earth, when I feel guided, what She has to say to us at that particular moment in time. I am always surprised and delighted by her take on what we've just been experiencing and the new pieces She adds to our conversation.
I know that I could ask Her within the silence of my own heart and She would answer me, but I love hearing Her voice through the poems Andrea Mathieson recorded when she attuned to the plants in her garden during a two-month period in 2005. Andrea created a book and cards called Gaia's Invitation, Poems from the Sacred Earth and I purchased my copy from Andrea during her visit to Nanaimo in 2006.
It's been 8 years of steady use and my copy is tattered and wrinkled. I tried to replace it with a newer copy a few years ago but ended up selling that one to someone else. I love the bent corners and smudges of dirt that decorate mine. I remember all the forest floors it has sat on and the many hands that have pulled a card on behalf of the group and read Gaia's message to us in a loud and sometimes quavering voice. Each message is from a different plant, tree or bush and is numbered from #1-120. The book is divided into sections like Gaia's Voice, Birthing, Dying and Destiny, and Following Pleasure.
I always find the section name significant and this proved true of the card I pulled during the social time following the Healing Ceremony I led in Likely on Sept. 22, 2014.
The poem was #99 from the plant Clematis. It is the first poem in the section titled, "Heart and Will" which follows the section called, "Understanding Sadness and Pain". A great deal of sadness and pain had been expressed during the ceremony about the dam breach at the mine and Gaia's message through Clematis felt so appropriate I asked for everyone's attention and read it out loud.
HEART AND WILL
Your heart is my foundation.
I live there in my fullness.
A new design is forming;
you cannot shape it with your will.
Feel the rippling patterns moving
the waters of your being.
You are home to this creating.
Gaze upon your world
through the lattice of your heart
and see the beauty forming.
The next morning while I was visiting and singing with Quesnel Lake I was guided to read the poem out loud again. Something very unexpected happened immediately afterwards and then something profound – at least it was for me – happened after that.
This is a live recording. I am sitting on the dock at Cedar Point Park in Likely, facing Quesnel Lake. When my laptop returns to me I will add a picture of this exact location so you can see for yourself. DC
Sound Engineer: Tom Korver
Although this sound weaving came through my heart and out my mouth, I believe its emergence was created by a series of people, plants, Waters and events converging on a specific 10 minutes in time.
The adults and children at the Healing Ceremony in Likely the night before, the Clematis #99 poem received in 2005 by Andrea Matheson, the Robin song I learned from my grandfather in 1970, the breach of the earthen dam at the Mt. Polley Mine on August 4th 2014 which resulted in the presence of solids and slurry from the tailings pond in Quesnel Lake, and my subsequent 'call' to come and learn at the shores of one of the most mysterious and ancient Waters I have had the privilege to meet.
Thank you Elder Lake Quesnel for the important teaching that "if we choose, we can sing traditional songs with new stories attached." As I sing this new song over and over, it continues to inspire and change me in all the ways I need to be . DC
